Looking at data from Wednesday of last week, South Africa remained firmly at the top of the list of COVID-19 related metrics in Africa, from confirmed cases to deaths.
However, starting at the end of this month, South Africa will join the many other countries around the world that have began easing COVID-19 containment policies, per BBC News.
Relative to the world, South Africa's response to COVID-19 has up to this point been swift and effective. A nationwide lockdown began March 26th, and was extended to April 30th after initially set to be released on April 16th (per The International Monetary Fund's policy tracker).
Statistics coming out of South Africa in the opening weeks of May could be used to inform policy across the continent, and the world.
